Macedonian Filigree

Macedonian Filigree is an old art form, developed in secret, and passed on as a trade from one generation to the next. It expresses both history and culture, dating as far back as the Ottoman era in Macedonia, and has been kept alive with every next generation.

Considered by many as the crème de la crème of Macedonian jewellery, it is an emblem of Macedonian hand-crafted art. Each item is designed manually by artisans under a time-consuming and delicate process. Filigree work is created by carefully twisting, curling and plating together thin threads of pliable precious metals such as gold and silver in intricate designs.

Filigree pieces retain their value, not just because of the charming aesthetic appeal but also due to the continued fascination with the intricacy of the design. Unfortunately, this old craft is dying out in Macedonia as only a very small number of people have continued to work in this field.

At Nas Nakit, we want to preserve this tradition and culture and provide employment for Macedonian Artisans through the creation and promotion of Macedonian-made filigree jewellery.
