The significance of the gospel, the revolver, and the dagger
The significance of this symbology relates to an oath that the Macedonian revolutionaries took upon joining the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation. It was a blood oath, taken very seriously, which is replicated below:
"I swear by God, my faith and honour, that I will fight to the death for the freedom of the Macedonians in Macedonia, that I will submit unconditionally to the leadership and will unprotestingly carry out its orders; that I will betray no one neither by word nor deed, the secret to which I wed myself today, and all that I shall see here and understand concerning the cause from today on. If I break my oath, let me be killed by one of the comrades, with the revolver or the dagger which here I kiss."
