The Macedonian Lion
Like the Macedonian Sun, the Macedonian Lion is yet another one of Europe's oldest symbols that survives as a cultural symbol.
In the ancient world, lions dwelled in Macedonia, with lion hunting being a popular pastime. Macedonian kings wore lion skin and commemorated their defeat of the Greeks at the Battle of Chaeronea by erecting a statue of a proud standing lion on the battlefield.
The Lion has continued to be a Macedonian symbol even after the destruction of the Macedonian Kingdom, appearing in the coat of arms in the course of the Middle Ages and later periods, and has survived to this day as a very important symbol of our heritage.
